Product Description

This is a beautiful example of a vintage silver Norwegian Solje wedding brooch. The Solje is the traditional national jewelry of Norway. Soljes were often given for special occasions such as weddings or christenings. This particular piece would have been probably been given for a wedding due to the heart and crown elements. The dangles or “spoons” were once thought to reflect evil away from the wearer during susceptible times of transition.

This piece is quite long, measuring just over 5 1/2″ long! Twisted silver wire decorates the outline of the heart and crown. Similar twisted wire filigree is beautifully connected to form the base for the dangles or spoons. The spoons appear to be a silver color on the back and gold on the front so I believe they are gold plated. Three stamped silver crosses hang from the three main dangles. This is an older piece with the pin extending slightly beyond the pin and an old “c-catch” clasp. This would date it to before 1910. A really beautiful and delicate Norwegian Solje with wonderful traditional meaning behind it.

Signed: It appears to be marked 830S for silver content and there is a maker’s mark but I’m unable to make it out.

Size: Just over 5 1/2″ long x about 2″ at the widest point.

Condition: Excellent with age related patina to the silver metal.
